![]() Approximately 40 percent of these unplanned pregnancies end in abortion, and about 10 percent end by miscarriage. About one-half of all pregnancies in the United States, or more than 3 million pregnancies annually, are unplanned. Most teenage pregnancies and births are unplanned and are part of a more general problem for all women in their childbearing years. However, it was still twice as high as Canada’s rate and much higher yet than other Western democracies (see Figure 9.4 “Teenage Birth Rates in Selected Western Democracies (Number of Annual Births per 1,000 Women Aged 15–19)”). This rate represented a substantial decline from the early 1990s, when the rate reached a peak of almost 60. The birth rate for females aged 15–19 in 2009 was 39.1 births per 1,000 females. In their most recent act of sexual intercourse, almost 86 percent of girls and 93 percent of boys used contraception, again most often a condom. ![]() ![]() About three-fourths of girls in today’s sexually experienced group and 85 percent of boys in this group use contraception, most often a condom, the first time they ever have sex. About 43 percent of never-married teens ages 15–19 of both sexes have had sexual intercourse (Martinez et al., 2011) this percentage represents a drop from its highest point, in 1988, of 51 percent for females and of 60 percent for males. As noted earlier, teenagers are much more sexually active today than they were before the sexual revolution. ![]() ![]() ![]() How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world? Most of my historicals have a touch of mystery. I’ve ended up combining all of those in my historical stories. ![]() I love reading mysteries, suspense novels, as well as historical romances. Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading. That’s when I started believing I really was a writer. At the ACFW conference in 2003, I had an editor, a copy editor, and a published author tell me I had a great story. I tried to start writing novels the beginning of 2001. ![]() When did you first discover that you were a writer? Not to mention the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed my skydiving adventure. I guess jumping out of an airplane could qualify as being quirky. What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done? Just little things like that go into each story. I’ve written that in some of my characters. I’m a bit of a tomboy and that’s in a couple of my characters. I think there’s a little bit of me in each of my heroines. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters. Now I'm featuring Janelle Mowery with a solo book. ![]() ![]() ![]() If she wasn’t The Queen Brenda would win easily. ![]() But of course our imaginary fights swiftly became more outlandish – “who would win in a fight between Brenda (who is Georgia’s grandmother, an elderly lady) and The Queen?” In this case it was : The Queen would win because although she is very old and frail, Brenda would be too scared to clobber her, because she’s The Queen. When she was around 11 or 12 I used to play a game with my daughter called WHO WOULD WIN? I’ll give you an example – the first player says something like “who would win in a fight between a lion and a polar bear?” Each player then tries to find the best reason why one or the other would win. This wasn’t the jolliest read, but heck, my friendly GR poppets, life is not all ha-ha-ha, hee-hee-hee. ![]() So should you be wondering what a REAL epidemic looks like, this was the big one. It was really bad and it happened before medical science understood what was causing it. The Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918 is the gold standard of modern epidemics and this book is a solid account of what happened. Revived review as a public service during the current Coronavirus outbreak. ![]() |
